Talking about tanka

I was honored to be invited to speak at the Tanka Society of America's bi-annual Tanka Sunday event in Albany, NY. I discussed the forthcoming translation of a book of tanka poetry that I am editing, By the Shore of Lake Michigan. First published by my grandparents Tomiko and Ryokuyo Matsumoto in 1960, the poems begin in 1942 with their imprisonment in a Heart Mountain, WY WWII concentration camp, and continue through their eventual release and relocation to Chicago. My friend and translator Kyoko Miyabe discussed the challenges of translating the Japanese-language poems into English.
